Note: many of these references were written during the 1980s when the level of interest in rule-based expert systems was much higher than it is today. Although the Web was not available as a delivery vehicle during this period, the material in these books on inferencing methods, knowledge representation, problem selection and knowledge engineering is still relevant. Most of these earlier books are out of print. They are often available in academic libraries or for purchase through the used book dealers who support online book requests.
