Initial Attributes and Rules [9]

If you and your expert have developed a list of possible values for each of the goal attributes, you are ready to formulate the final layer of rules. Remember, our approach to building an expert system involves working backward from the conclusions!
Step 1: Document the set of facts that would lead the expert to provide each value of each goal attribute as advice. One of the goal attributes identified for the auto diagnosis example is named problem. The list of values for this goal variable would include: the battery is dead, the fuel tank is empty and the engine is flooded. For each of these values, we would want the expert to help identify and name attributes that are evidence of the problem before we use these facts to formulate rules. The list of possible values (or range of values) needs to be documented for each new attribute. Test cases will be helpful with this step if they allow identification of the factors relevant to a specific diagnosis. You may want to design a form for documenting attributes.
